Viola hederacea
A low, spreading evergreen perennial that creeps by runners to form a dense mat 2 to 4 inches tall, spreading 12 to 18 inches or more. It performs best in part to full shade with regular water, tolerating heavier soils and moist conditions where many ground covers struggle. Small white and violet-blue flowers appear over a long season above rounded, kidney-shaped green leaves. Excellent as a soft lawn substitute in shaded courtyards, for filling between stepping stones, edging shaded borders, and underplanting where a fine-textured carpet is wanted.
