Mentha pulegium
A low, creeping perennial mint with prostrate, rooting stems that form a dense aromatic mat of small rounded green leaves releasing a strong minty scent when crushed. It prefers moist soils and full sun to partial shade, taking moderate to regular water and tolerating heavier, damp ground that many groundcovers dislike. Whorls of small lavender flowers rise on short upright stems roughly 4 to 6 inches tall in summer. Suited to moist low-traffic areas, lawn alternatives in damp sites, and pondside or swale edges; note it can spread aggressively and is toxic if ingested.
