Snow in Summer

Cerastium tomentosum

A low, spreading evergreen perennial growing roughly 6 to 8 inches tall and spreading 2 to 3 feet, forming dense silvery mats of fine, woolly gray foliage. It thrives in full sun with excellent drainage and needs only low to moderate water once established, tolerating poor and rocky soils well. In late spring it covers itself in a sheet of pure white, star-shaped flowers, giving rise to the common name. Use it for slopes, rock gardens, dry borders, edging, and as a tough, fast filling groundcover in low-water plantings.
