Arctostaphylos ‘Dr. Hurd’ (Dr. Hurd Manzanita)

Dr. Hurd Manzanita

Arctostaphylos ‘Dr. Hurd’

A large, upright evergreen manzanita that grows treelike to eight to fifteen feet tall and nearly as wide, developing smooth mahogany-red bark and an open branching structure as it matures. It performs best in full sun to light shade with excellent drainage and low water once established, and resents summer irrigation in heavy soils. Large pale-green leaves set off clusters of white urn-shaped flowers in winter and early spring that feed bees and hummingbirds. Use it as a specimen, screen, or focal point where its striking form and bark can be displayed in low-water landscapes.
