California Fuchsia

California Fuchsia

Epilobium canum

California fuchsia is a herbaceous to woody-based perennial California native that forms spreading mounds roughly 1 to 2 feet tall and wider, with gray-green to silvery narrow foliage. It thrives in full sun and is highly drought tolerant once established, performing on lean soils and rocky banks. Showy tubular scarlet to orange-red flowers cover the plant in late summer and fall, a peak hummingbird season, providing color when many natives are dormant. Cut back hard in winter to refresh growth; use it on slopes, dry borders, rock gardens, and habitat plantings where its spreading roots help bind soil.
