California Wax Myrtle

California Wax Myrtle

Myrica californica

California wax myrtle is an evergreen large shrub to small tree, commonly 10 to 20 feet tall and capable of more in favorable sites, with a dense, upright habit and aromatic, glossy dark green lance-shaped leaves. It can be maintained as a clipped hedge or screen or allowed to grow into a multi-stemmed small tree, and it produces small purplish, waxy fruit valued by birds. It accepts full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to a range of soils, taking moderate water and tolerating coastal conditions and some wind. Use it for evergreen screens, hedges, windbreaks, and habitat plantings, particularly in coastal and woodland-edge landscapes.
