Hummingbird Sage

Hummingbird Sage

Salvia spathacea

Hummingbird sage is a rhizomatous, evergreen perennial that spreads to form colonies roughly 1 to 2 feet tall, with large, fragrant, arrow-shaped green leaves. Unusual among sages, it tolerates partial shade and dry shade beneath oaks, performing with low to moderate water and good drainage. From spring into early summer it sends up showy whorled spikes of deep magenta to rose flowers that are a strong draw for hummingbirds. Use it as a spreading groundcover for shaded slopes, woodland understory, and habitat plantings where its spreading habit fills in over time.
