Carpobrotus edulis
A fast, fleshy succulent ground cover with thick, three-sided green leaves that trail flat to the ground, staying only a few inches tall while spreading several feet wide per plant. It thrives in full sun with very low water once established, tolerating heat, wind, salt spray, sandy soils, and coastal exposure. Large daisylike flowers in lavender to rosy purple open across the mat in spring and into summer. Widely used for broad slope and bank cover, erosion control, freeway and parking-strip plantings, and tough coastal sites; note its aggressive, weedy nature and avoid placement near sensitive wildland areas.
