Carpobrotus edulis
A robust, mat-forming succulent ground cover with thick, fingerlike triangular green leaves that lie flat and spread several feet across, remaining just a few inches high. It is at home in full sun with minimal water once established and withstands heat, wind, salt, sandy soils, and coastal conditions. Large daisylike flowers in pale to golden yellow open over the foliage in spring through summer. A standard for large-scale slope and bank cover, erosion control, freeway embankments, parking strips, and harsh coastal plantings; given its vigorous, spreading habit, keep it away from sensitive native habitats.
