Juncus effusus
The soft rush is a clumping evergreen perennial forming upright, arching tufts of smooth, cylindrical green stems typically 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. It thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and tolerates standing water, making it ideal for pond margins, rain gardens, bioswales, and detention basins. Plant in full sun to part shade; it spreads slowly by rhizomes to knit soil along waterlines. Specify it for erosion control on wet banks, stormwater plantings, and naturalistic water features where its vertical texture and habitat value are assets.
