Encelia californica
California bush sunflower is a fast-growing, soft-wooded California native subshrub reaching about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded mound of green, slightly resinous foliage. It grows in full sun and is very drought tolerant once established, thriving in coastal bluff and dry inland conditions. Bright yellow daisy flowers with dark centers bloom heavily in late winter through spring, drawing pollinators and butterflies. Use it for quick slope cover and erosion control, coastal and habitat restoration, and mass plantings in low-water landscapes; shear after bloom to keep it compact.
