Carex praegracilis
California field sedge, also called clustered field sedge, is a rhizomatous, spreading sedge native across much of California that forms a fine-textured green sod 6 to 12 inches tall, with the ability to knit together into a continuous cover. Its slender dark green blades and creeping rhizomes make it a favored native turf substitute. It tolerates full sun to partial shade, handles a range of soils including seasonally wet and compacted ground, and adapts to both regular and reduced water once established. Specify it as a mowable or unmowed lawn alternative, meadow planting, bioswale and detention-basin cover, and groundcover for low-water and habitat landscapes.
