Ribes viburnifolium
Catalina currant is a low, spreading evergreen shrub that grows about two to three feet tall and can mound six to eight feet across, with glossy dark green leaves that release a pleasant resinous fragrance. It tolerates dry shade and part sun, performs well under oaks, and needs only occasional summer water once established. Small reddish to pink flowers appear in late winter and early spring, followed by red berries that provide forage for birds. It is an excellent evergreen groundcover for shaded slopes, erosion control, and understory plantings where many natives struggle.
