Heuchera sanguinea
This clump-forming evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial produces low mounds of rounded, scalloped green leaves roughly 8 to 12 inches tall, with airy flower stems rising above the foliage. From late spring into summer it bears slender wands of small bell-shaped flowers in bright coral red that are highly attractive to hummingbirds. Grow it in part shade with moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and regular water, though it tolerates more sun in cooler coastal exposures. Use it for shade borders, woodland edges, container plantings, and front-of-bed color where the long bloom and tidy foliage perform.
