Muhlenbergia rigens
Deergrass is a large, clumping evergreen bunchgrass forming a dense fountain of fine green to gray-green blades 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, with narrow, spike-like flowering stems rising above the foliage in summer and fall. It is a workhorse native grass, tolerant of full sun to light shade and a wide range of soils, taking little to moderate water once established. Its deep, fibrous root system makes it excellent for erosion control and slope stabilization. Use it in mass plantings, meadow and restoration projects, borders, and bioswales, and as a structural specimen in low-water native landscapes.
