Japanese Pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis)

Japanese Pachysandra

Pachysandra terminalis

A spreading evergreen groundcover perennial growing 6 to 12 inches tall and creeping steadily by rhizomes to form a uniform carpet of glossy, dark green toothed leaves whorled at the stem tips. It is a true shade plant, preferring partial to full shade with regular moisture and rich, well-drained soil, and it struggles in hot sun. Short spikes of small white flowers appear in spring, but the dense foliage is the main feature. Use it as a durable groundcover under trees and on the north side of buildings, for shaded slopes, and as a low-maintenance filler where lawn will not grow.
