Fragaria chiloensis
Beach strawberry is a California native evergreen groundcover that spreads by runners to form a dense mat about 4 to 8 inches tall, with thick, glossy, dark green trifoliate leaves. It grows in full sun to part shade with low to moderate water once established, tolerates sandy and coastal soils, and produces white flowers in spring followed by small red fruit. Tough and self-knitting, it suppresses weeds and binds soil effectively. Use it for low-water native plantings, coastal landscapes, parkways, and erosion control on gentle slopes.
