Ceanothus ‘Ray Hartman’
‘Ray Hartman’ is a vigorous large hybrid California lilac that can be grown as a tall shrub or trained as a small single-trunk tree, reaching 12 to 20 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide. Large, glossy, dark green leaves provide a strong evergreen backdrop, and in spring it produces showy spikes of medium blue flowers that attract bees and butterflies. It is one of the more adaptable ceanothus, tolerating heavier soils and more garden water than most while remaining drought tolerant once established in full sun. Use it as a specimen, screen, or small patio tree, or as a bold spring-flowering anchor in low-water and habitat plantings.
