Festuca rubra
Red fescue is a fine-textured, cool-season perennial bunch and rhizomatous grass that forms soft green to blue-green tufts generally 6 to 12 inches tall, spreading to knit a low turf or meadow. It grows in full sun to part shade and prefers moderate water, though established stands tolerate some drought and can be left unmown for a flowing, naturalistic look. Slender flowering culms rise above the foliage in late spring before the blades soften and lay over. Use it as a low-water lawn alternative, in meadow and erosion-control mixes, on slopes, and under high-branching trees where a fine, informal groundcover is wanted.
