Sand Dune Sedge

Sand Dune Sedge

Carex pansa

A low, rhizomatous evergreen sedge native to coastal California, spreading by underground runners to form a dense, sod-like turf roughly 4 to 8 inches tall with fine, dark green blades. It tolerates full sun to part shade and accepts a wide range of water, from regular irrigation as a mowable lawn alternative to occasional water once established. Its tough, knitting root system makes it a strong choice for erosion control on slopes and sandy soils, foot-traffic-tolerant green roofs, parkway strips, and meadow-style plantings where a no-mow or low-mow groundcover is wanted.
