Heteromeles arbutifolia
Toyon is an evergreen California native shrub that matures at roughly 6 to 15 feet tall and wide, with an upright, multi-stemmed habit that can be limbed up into a small tree. It grows in full sun to part shade and is very drought tolerant once established, accepting little to no summer water in inland and coastal settings. Flat clusters of small white summer flowers give way to abundant bright red berries that persist into winter, providing strong seasonal interest and excellent wildlife and bird habitat. Use it as a screen, informal hedge, slope stabilizer, or anchor in low-water and chaparral restoration plantings.
