Lampranthus spectabilis
A succulent, spreading iceplant-type groundcover growing 10 to 15 inches tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, with upright fleshy gray-green, three-sided leaves. It requires full sun and excellent drainage, is very drought tolerant once established, and suits coastal and hot inland exposures with little supplemental water. In late winter through spring it produces a dramatic carpet of large, vivid magenta to purple daisy-like flowers. Use it for slopes, banks, rock gardens, parkways, and bold low-water color where fast-draining soil is available.
