Quercus lobata
Valley oak is a large deciduous tree, the largest California oak, capable of reaching sixty feet or more in height with a broad, spreading canopy and deeply lobed green leaves that turn yellow before dropping. It prefers full sun and deep soils with access to groundwater, and while drought tolerant once established, it grows fastest where roots can reach moisture. It provides important wildlife habitat and acorns for birds and mammals, and develops a stately, picturesque branching form with age. Use it as a long lived shade and specimen tree for parks, large landscapes, valley floors, and riparian and oak woodland restoration.
