Platanus racemosa
Western sycamore is a large deciduous tree reaching fifty to eighty feet or more, with a broad canopy, large lobed leaves, and striking mottled bark that peels to reveal cream, tan, and gray patches. It prefers full sun and grows naturally along streams and washes, doing best with access to moisture though it tolerates seasonal drought once established. Its bold trunk and architectural branching provide strong winter interest, and it offers valuable habitat and nesting sites for birds. Use it as a fast growing shade and specimen tree for parks, large landscapes, and riparian and streamside restoration.
