Muehlenbeckia axillaris
Wire vine is a low, dense groundcover and trailing plant reaching about 2 to 6 inches tall and spreading 2 to 3 feet or more, with slender wiry reddish-brown stems set with tiny rounded dark green leaves. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers appear in late spring to summer and may be followed by small translucent fruit. It grows in full sun to part shade, tolerates a range of soils with good drainage, and needs only low to moderate water once established. Use it as a fine-textured groundcover for slopes and banks, cascading over walls and containers, filling between rocks, and softening edges in low-water plantings.
